Gregory C. Zionkowski, 72, of Nanticoke passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Guardian Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Sheatown following a long period of declining health. Born March 12, 1949, he was a son of the late Peter F. and Albina Gilbus Zionkowski. Gregory attended St. Mary’s grade school and was a graduate of Nanticoke High School. He earned a Bachelors Degree from Kings College and Masters Degree from the University of Scranton. He also took art classes at Wilkes College. He was on the faculty of Bishop Hoban High School which became Holy Redeemer High School, where he was known as “Mr. Z”, teaching Art, Drafting, Psychology, Religion and History. He also coordinating the annual Arts Show, and designed sets for school plays and musicals, reluctantly retiring after 38 years because of health issues. Gregory was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, Nanticoke and lifelong member of St. Mary of Czestochowa Parish before the consolidation of parishes. He served as Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Communion, Adult Funeral Server, Collection counter, CCD teacher, pierogi maker and member of the committee for the redecorating of the parish main site and on the cemetery committee. Active in the community, he served on the Advisory Committee for Scholastic Arts Awards at Wilkes University, was active with the Valley Theater Guild, Nanticoke Historical Society and helping neighbors and friends. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and canning, especially when it involved produce from his garden; traveling, especially his trips to Spain, France, Mexico and Canada and one day trips to New York and Philadelphia and visiting museums, art exhibits, botanical gardens and historical sites. He liked being out in nature, attending movies and eating out with friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Peter. Surviving are a nephew, Tony Zionkowski and a niece, Michele Zionkowski McDermott and her husband, Jay all of Aiken, South Carolina as well as several grand nieces and nephews. Funeral services will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Faustina Parish, alternate site, St. Mary’s Church, 1030 S. Hanover Street, Nanticoke with the Rev. James E. McGahagan as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township. Viewing and visitation hours will be Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
