William (Hoppy) Hopkins Jr., 89, of Sively Street, Hanover Township, passed away unexpectedly Saturday January 15, 2022 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
Born May 28, 1932 in Scranton, he was a son of the late William and Mary Alice (Jones) Hopkins. A resident of Hanover Township most of his life, he was a graduate of Hanover Memorial High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving with the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He was stationed in Germany and received the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Occupation Medal (Germany) and attained the rank of Airman 2nd class.
He was employed by Eberhard Faber in Mountain Top for over 25 years. He also worked for Hanover Township in the maintenance department until retiring.
Hoppy’s main interest in life was his wife and family; watching them grow and sharing in their milestones. He lived a full, happy and healthy life as he enjoyed many events and gatherings at his son’s house in Mountain Top. He also looked forward to pizza every Friday night with his family. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and spending time at the hunting cabin in Hunlock Creek with his friends. Hoppy will always be remembered as a kind soul with a big smile who loved his country and was very patriotic.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who he lovingly referred to as his “Sapphire” of forty-four years, the former, Loretta Opachinski on September 1, 2017, son Steven Mera Jr., and siblings, Beverly Isburner and Theodore Hopkins.
He is survived by a son, Shawn Mera and wife, Renee, Mountain Top; a daughter, Gail Kopiak, Warrior Run; grandchildren, Nicole Grohe, Michael Kopiak, Steven Mera III (Heather), Joshua Mera (Jane), Jordan Mera Carroll (Ryan), and McKenna Mera; great-grandchildren, Taylor Warman and Shon Kocher; and as well as several nieces and nephews.
