Obituary of Rose Smith

Rose Mary Smith, 78, of Nanticoke passed away Thursday, October 17, 2019 at River Run Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Kingston following an illness.

 

Born July 12, 1941 in Liberty Township, Kansas, she was a daughter of the late Gerald and Wilma VanWenkle Woodside.  She grew up in Kansas and graduated from High School in Chester and later attended nursing school at St. Mary’s in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  She married James P. Smith who she met while living in Lincoln, NE where he was stationed with the U.S. Air Force.  She and Jim resided in Nanticoke as well as Shickley, Nebraska for many years.  Jim passed away on August 30, 2012 after 48 years of marriage.  Rose returned to live in Nanticoke in 2016.   

 

Most of her life, Rose was a homemaker raising her five sons.  Early in life she worked in nursing and later in the pharmacy at Rite-Aid in Nanticoke as well as the laboratory at Kirby Health Center.  In Shickley, she was active in the American Legion Post Auxiliary, as well as Quilts for Veterans.  She belonged to the women’s club in Nanticoke.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, James, she was also preceded in death her son, Darrell on October 15, 2002.

 

Surviving are her sons, Jeffrey and girlfriend, Suzette Werts of Nanticoke; Kenneth and wife Cindy of Nanticoke, Ivan of Ohiowa, NE and Justin and wife Becki of Larksville; grandchildren, Tyler, Derik, Kaitlyn, Ariel and husband, John Coledo, Cody, Austin, Logan, Bret, Seth, Wayne and Devan; sisters, Kathy, Karen, Deanna, Lorraine, Linda and Jennifer; a brother, Wayne; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Conrad of Nanticoke as well as nieces and nephews including Lora Lee Yanus and husband, Paul of Nanticoke and Lynn Casper and husband, David of Hanover Township.

 

Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26th at 3 p.m. from Davis-Dinelli Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with the Rev. Timothy G. Hall, pastor of Nebo Baptist Church, Nanticoke, officiating.  Private interment will be in Fern Knoll Burial Park, Dallas.

 

A viewing and period of visitation will be Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

 

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Smith’s memory may be made to the S.P.C.A.
