Leona L. Bonczewski, formerly of Wanamie, passed away Thursday morning, March 9, 2023 at Bonham Nursing Center, Register, where she had been a patient for three months.

Born June 21, 1933 in Nanticoke, she was a daughter of the late Stephen and Pauline Didbardiz Sedorchuk. Leona lived in Newport Township most of her life and was a graduate of the former Newport Township High School.

She married Leonard L. Bonczewski on June 4, 1955. They were married sixty-three years when he passed on December 23, 2018.

Leona was employed in the local garment industry until the mid-1980’s, and later at the Mill Memorial Library, Nanticoke, and as an activities aide at the Heritage House Nursing Home, Wilkes-Barre until her retirement.

She was a member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, Alden Station.

In addition to her husband, Leonard, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Leona in 1965; brothers, Stephen, Henry Andrew, and Raymond Sedorchuk Sr.; and a sister, Anita Rinehamer.

She will be deeply missed by her family. Surviving are her sons, Leonard L. Jr. and wife, Rose, of Wanamie; Leon L. and wife Teresa, of Glen Lyon; and Leigh L. and wife, Christine, of Hunlock Creek; seven grandsons, Lucas (Sheila), Thomas (Stacey), Robert (Malissa), Benjamin, Anthony (Carla), Leon and Andrew Bonczewski; a granddaughter, Kathryn Bonczewski; five great- grandchildren, Jimmy Higgs; Dylan, Gage, Thomas and Dalton Bonczewski; a great- great grandson, Aiden Higgs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service for Leona and Leonard will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023 from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke. Family and friends may call for visitation from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

Private interment will be at the convenience of the family in Holy Resurrection Orthodox Cemetery, Alden.
