Walter Zielinski Obituary

Walter L. Zielinski, 100, of Iselin, New Jersey, passed away on Friday, November 3, 2023 at JFK University Hospital, Edison, NJ, where he was taken following a fall at his home.


Born on October 29, 1923 in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son of the late John and Eva Borowski Zielinski and was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School. Walter was a veteran of World War II, having served his country in the U.S. Army’s Company C, 41st Armored Infantry Regiment, and having taken part in the invasion of Normandy. His unit fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and the campaign through Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He attained the rank of Sergeant and received the Good Conduct Medal; Meritorious Unit Award; EAME Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars; and the World War II Victory Medal;


Walter married the former Irene Szychowski and they resided in New Jersey since the early 1950’s. Walter was employed as a machinist and foreman at an engineering firm until his retirement.


Walter enjoyed reading detective stories and westerns; gardening; and home repairs; and was a fan of the New York Yankees and Giants. He also liked trips to Atlantic City with his wife and activities at the local senior center.


Walter was preceded in death by his brothers, Stanley, John, Joseph, Eugene, Chester and Edward Zielinski and his sisters, Mary Shepanski, Jane Stoshak, and Alice Zyskowski.


Surviving are his wife, Irene, with whom he shared seventy-two years of marriage; sons; Michael Zielinski of Bedminster, NJ; and James Zielinski and his wife, Marianna of Perrineville, NJ; grandson, Roman of the U.S. Virgin Islands; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.


Friends may call for visitation 10 – 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke.


A Blessing Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Cemetery chapel, 1594 South Main Street, Hanover Township with the Rev. Richard J. Cirba officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the U.S. Army.
