Elizabeth (Betty) Swithers, 89, of Nanticoke, passed away Friday morning, December 22, 2023 a patient at Riverstreet Manor, Wilkes-Barre.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin A. Swithers on July 2, 2020 after sixty-three years of marriage.
Born May 28, 1934, she was a daughter of the late John and Winifred Patterson O’Donnell and was raised in Muhlenburg. Betty was a graduate of Shickshinny High School with the class of 1952, and
early in life was employed by Bell Telephone Company, Wilkes-Barre. For most of her married life, she assisted her husband in the operation of Swithers Heating Oil Company as secretary and bookkeeper.
Music was an important part of her life and Betty will be remembered for her beautiful singing voice and sang for many occasions throughout the years. She was an active member of Firwood United Methodist Church, Wilkes-Barre where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Orpheus Choral Society. She also belonged to Church Women Unified, serving as president for many years; and a sixty year member of the Nanticoke Chapter # 174, Order of Eastern Star, later merging with Chapter 396, Dallas.
In addition to her husband, Melvin, she was the last member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her sisters, Gweneth Bonham and Doreen Sorber; and a brother, John O’Donnell.
Surviving is a daughter, Ellen Swithers, Wilkes-Barre; a son, David Swithers (Denise), Wapwallopen; grandchildren, Ariel, Cody, and Austin; a great grandson, Anthony; as well as nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2024 from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with the Rev. Neil S. Martin, her nephew, and pastor of Calvary Bible Chapel, Muhlenburg, officiating.
Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Hanover Township.
Viewing and visitation hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 2nd at the funeral home.
Order of Eastern Star Memorial Service will be held at 6:15 p.m.
