Obituary of John F. Elmy

John F. “Jackie” Elmy, 82, of the Sheatown section of Newport Township, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2025. He was a patient at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born October 27, 1942, in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Francis Elmy and the late Mildred Walk Elmy Ruth.
He was a graduate of Newport Township High School, class of 1960, and attended business school where he studied accounting.
Jackie proudly served his country for five years with the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was honorably discharged in 1967 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and received the Army Commendation Medal for time served in the Dominican Republic. He also received a certificate of recognition for his service during the cold war.
During his career, he was the controller for L.B. Smith Inc. for many years, was an auditor for the local garment industry union, and was employed by National Music Center.
A big part of Jackie’s life was dedicating years to serving Newport Township. He was a devoted member of the Sheatown Hose Company, Glen Lyon Hose Company, and Newport Township Fire Department, after the consolidation of departments. He held many positions within the department, serving as treasurer for the Newport Township Fireman’s Relief Association. He formerly served as secretary for Newport Township, a position he held for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, H. Merton Ruth; a brother, Cleveland Elmy; and sisters, Jean Bray, and Estelle Sudick.
Surviving is his loving wife, the former Catherine Markiewicz, with whom he shared 60 years of marriage; a brother, George Elmy; sisters, Thelma Presnal, and Evelyn Bushelli; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with the Rev. Roger C. Noss Jr., pastor of Mount Moriah Independent Community Fellowship, officiating.
Friends may call for viewing and visitation hours Thursday from 5 p.m. until the time of the service.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the Nanticoke Ambulance, the Newport Township Rescue Squad, and the staff at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center for the special care given to Jackie in his time of need.
