Obituary of Loretta P. Chmura

Loretta P. Chmura, 77, of Nanticoke passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at her home.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph, on June 14, 2020, 15 days after their 40th wedding anniversary.
Born February 15, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Michael Kuniega and Melania Kleyps Kuniega.
Loretta was a graduate of Newport Township High School, class of 1965, she furthered her education, graduating from Wyoming Seminary Business School and began employment as a secretary for the Nanticoke Redevelopment Authority. She worked for 22 years as Director of Activities and Volunteers at the former St. Stanislaus Nursing Home, later becoming Mercy Health Care, Sheatown and last at Wesley Village, before retiring in 2024.
Loretta will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, kindness, generosity, and volunteerism. She held a special place in her heart for the elderly and especially veterans' causes. Loretta spent countless hours and energy supporting the American Legion Post #350, Nanticoke and the Ladies Auxiliary, where she held many positions including Past President and was a District President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Dept of PA. Served the community with numerous organizations and held memberships including; Wyoming Valley Woman’s Club where she was selected Woman of the Year in 2016; Nanticoke Women's Club; the 400 Club; served as a Candy Striper leader; and organized the 80’s Club of Mercy Health Care Center and had received the Mercy Leadership Award; She was first woman President of the General Pulaski Committee; was active in the United Way, volunteered with nursing homes, school programs, and the American Red Cross.
She also played a crucial role in assisting boy scouts acquire their merit badges with the help of her Macaw Parrot.
She loved polkas and dancing, was very well known for her attendance to the local Polka dances and loved dancing on Pennsylvania Polka which aired on WVIA.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Joseph Chmura, who passed away in 2020.
Surviving is her sister, Carol Noonan and her husband Dennis; her brother, David Kuniega and his wife, Cathy; nephews, David Kuniega, Tim Kuniega and his wife, Christy, Michael Kuniega, Bryce Hillard, Archer Hillard, and Colton Kuniega; and her beloved blue and gold Macaw Parrot, Cocomo.
A Blessing Service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 East Broad Street, Nanticoke with the Rev. James Nash, officiating.
Visitation hours will be Monday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
Interment with Rite of Committal will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
