Joan S. Sopko, 87, of Nanticoke, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at Allied Services Mead Street Skilled Nursing, Wilkes-Barre. Born and raised in Hazleton, she was a graduate of Hazleton High School. She also graduated from Danville School of Nursing and, early in life, was a registered nurse at the former Retreat State Hospital. Prior to retiring, Joan was a customer service representative with the family insurance agency, Stasko Insurance Company, for many years. She was a member of St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, Nanticoke, and loved traveling throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her first husband Francis Stasko on June 27, 1996 and by a grandson, Andrew Stasko. She is survived by her husband, Edward Sopko, with whom she was married twenty years; her sons: Christopher Stasko and his wife, Gail, of Warrior Run, and their children Katlyn, Karley, and Kelsey Stasko; and Scott Stasko and his wife, Carey, of Mountain Top, and their daughter; Samantha Stasko. Funeral services will begin Saturday, 10:30 a.m. from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, 520 S. Hanover Street, Nanticoke. Interment and Rite of Committal will be in St. Joseph’s Slovak Cemetery, Nanticoke. Friends may call for viewing and visitation hours from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
