Obituary of Robert J. Schmidt

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert J. Schmidt, 71, of Hanover Township, passed away early Saturday morning, February 17, 2024, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born May 14, 1952 in Wilkes-Barre, and raised in Scranton, he was a son of the late William and Anna Hughes Schmidt. Robert was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School and proudly served his country during the Vietnam Conflict, enlisting with the U.S. Marine Corps. He served from 1970 until 1978 and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal with a bronze service star, and a Meritorious Mast Certificate. He met his lovely wife, the former Janice Edwards, at the Red Barons stadium where he worked for many years first as an usher and then in guest relations, and was a founding member and treasurer of their booster club. They married ten years later in 2002, at home plate, opening day. With two words, he became a husband, father, and grandfather. Robert was a hard worker. He enjoyed a long career of over forty years as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service. He loved the people and pets on his southside Scranton route. He was an active postal officer, receiving a postal service award for over a million miles of safe driving. Robert also enjoyed refereeing football for many years, at the mini, junior high, and high school level. He also became an usher at the arena for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hockey team. Robert was an avid sports fan, attending games in Philadelphia and at Penn State. He loved the Cherry Blossom Festival, and visiting the falls, but his very favorite past time was spending time with his loving wife and their dog Lizzy. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Schmidt. Surviving in addition to his wife, Janice, are step-sons, Jospeh Kunec III and his wife, Deborah; and Jason Kunec and his wife, Sherry; grandchildren, Tristan, Joelle, Jocelyn, and Collin Kunec; a sister, Judy Doohaluck and her husband, Bob; and a sister-in-law, Marie Schmidt. A celebration of life will begin 11 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2024 from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with the Rev. Dr. Robert Zanicky, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Wilkes-Barre, officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas. Family and friends may call for visitation hours from 9 a.m. until the time of the service Friday, March 1st at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Robert's memory to the A.S.P.C.A.
