Donald J. Morgis, 87, of the Alden section of Newport Township, passed away unexpectedly early Thursday morning, October 3, 2024, shortly after being taken to Commonwealth Health Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. His wife is the former, Anne Zegarski, with whom he celebrated 65 years of marriage on July 11th. Donald was born and raised in Glen Lyon, the son of the late Leonard and Louise Makowski Morgis who owned Morgis Floral Shop. From an early age Donald developed a solid work ethic, working for his parents and delivering flowers. He was a 1955 graduate of the former Newport Township High School. Donald furthered his education at Wilkes College and the University of Scranton, earning his Master’s degree. He enjoyed a long career as a history and English teacher on the faculty at Crestwood High School and Middle School, retiring in 1993 following 34 years of service. After his retirement from teaching, Don worked at the Berwick Ribbon factory for three years and then, delivered blood for the American Red Cross in the region for several years. He loved to talk, especially about sports, which he was always heavily involved with. He coached Little League baseball, and Biddy Basketball in Newport Township. He also started and coached the Junior High School Baseball Program at Crestwood. Donald was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and Baltimore Colts, later the Ravens. He was an avid outdoorsman his entire life and loved hunting and fishing, especially ice fishing. He was a great deer hunter, harvesting a deer every decade he hunted until the age of 85. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Anne, are sons; Dennis Morgis and his fiancé, Rachel Frable, and Mark Morgis and his wife, Deborah; a granddaughter, Michelle Kapalka and her husband, Francis Jr.; grandsons, Matthew Morgis and his wife, Tara; Daniel Morgis and Robert Morgis; as well as several cousins and many friends. Funeral services will begin 10:30 a.m. Monday from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Faustina Kowalska Parish, 520 S. Hanover Street, Nanticoke. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Sheatown. Viewing and visitation will be at the funeral home Monday from 9:30 a.m. until transferal to the church.
