Obituary of Florence Haas

Please share a memory of Florence to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Florence “Flossie” Haas, 86, of Hanover Township, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, October 7, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Known for her quick wit and warm personality, Flossie was beloved by all who knew her. Born in Nanticoke, where she spent most of her life, she was the youngest of six children of the late William and Lillian Wournell Kessler. She was a proud and dedicated member of Nebo Baptist Church, where she held the honor of being its oldest living member. She also was proud that her family had lived at Concrete City in her childhood. Flossie volunteered her time for many years at Nebo’s Vacation Bible School, often while her grandchildren attended, further deepening her connection to the church and her community. One of Flossie’s favorite traditions was attending the 9 p.m. Christmas Eve service, a special time she insisted on sharing with her entire family each year. For Flossie, family was everything. Nothing brought her more joy than gathering her loved ones around the dinner table, where laughter and stories were shared, creating lifelong memories. She also cherished family vacations, traveling to the New Jersey shore and even to the beaches of Mexico. Flossie loved feeling the sand between her toes and watching her grandchildren play in the ocean waves. At home, Flossie found comfort in simple pleasures. She could often be found wrapped in one of her many cozy, seasonal blankets, enjoying a favorite snack of potato chips or sweet treats. Her warmth, humor, and love for her family will be missed deeply but will live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Jeffrey in 1964; daughter, Donna Rydzewski in 2014; as well as her former spouse and best friend, Charles Haas. She was the last member of her immediate family being preceded by brothers, William and Robert Kessler, and sisters, Gert Grabski, Mary Motel, and Ann Maretta. She will be deeply missed by her daughters, Robin Polomchak, with whom she resided for the past ten years; Becky Josef; and Gail Voyton (Richard); her son-in-law, Richard “Rick” Rydzewski; her seven grandchildren, Ashley, Stephen (Mailee), Jessica (Patrick), Geary (Nicole), Nicholas, Max, and Emily; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; as well as nieces and nephews. Flossie’s family would like to thank the Hope Agency for providing years of care, and especially Cheryl and Stephanie for taking such good care of her. They also thank the staff of Residential Hospice for the comfort they provided in her final days. A Memorial Service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday at Nebo Baptist Church, 75 S. Prospect Street, Nanticoke. The family will receive friends for visitation Sunday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.
