Walter D. Sokolowski, 71, of Nanticoke passed away Sunday, December 22, 2024 at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia following a courageous three- year battle with cancer. Born March 31, 1953, he was a son of the late Stanley and Louise Cowell Sokolowski. Walter graduated from John S. Fine High School, class of 1971. In 1974, he began a twenty-year career with Luzerne County Correctional system. He served as a corrections officer, a training officer, and control sergeant before becoming Deputy Warden from 1984 until 1990. He later served as Warden from 1990 to 1994. Walter served as US Marshal for the Middle District of Pennsylvania from 1994 to 2002. He later worked with former US Representative Paul Kanjorski with homeland security for several years. From 2007 until the present time, he was Casino Compliance Supervisor for PA Gaming Board at Mount Airy Casino Resort, Mount Pocono. He belonged to several civic and professional organizations throughout the years and served as Controller for the city of Nanticoke for 5 years as well as Mayor from 1988 to 1994. He was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish / St. Aloysius Church, Wilkes-Barre. Surviving are his wife, the former Brenda Testaguzza, who he married July 7, 2007; step daughter, Jamie Davis Schelling and husband, Christopher and granddaughter, Sophie Schelling of Spring Brook Township; a brother, Stanley Sokolowski and wife, Sandy of Nanticoke; a sister, Mary Lou Yerke, of Old Forge; nieces, nephews, and great nephews; and a sister-in-law, Michelle Cicerchia, and wife, Louise of Sheatown. Funeral services will begin Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from Dinelli Family Funeral Home, 170 E. Broad Street, Nanticoke with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish / St. Aloysius Church, 143 Division Street, Wilkes-Barre with his pastor, The Rev. Richard Cirba, as celebrant. Friends and family may call for viewing and visitation hours on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Dinelli Family Funeral Home as well as Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until transferal to the church.
