Obituary of David Kowalek

David C. Kowalek, 69, of Shavertown passed away Friday, June 24, 2022 at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones. His wife is his beloved high school sweetheart, the former Patricia Haydock. Born June 18, 1953 in Nanticoke, he was a son of the late Eric and Grace (Vandermark) Kowalek. He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, class of 1971. David earned a Bachelor’s degree from Wilkes College, and an MBA from Adelphi University, Garden City, Long Island, NY. He began a long career in banking with Chase Manhattan, NY in 1975 and worked at several local banks in the Northeast PA area; starting at Hanover Bank and retiring from Wells Fargo. After retirement, he was a financial services consultant for Ardmore Banking Advisors. David was a very active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Dallas, and its Brotherhood group. He belonged to Nanticoke Lodge # 332, Free and Accepted Masons, and the YMCA, Wilkes-Barre. He served on the board of directors of Luzerne County Head Start, and volunteered with the Back Mountain Food Pantry. He had run a marathon and participated in several triathlons, most recent being August 2021 where he placed 3rd in his age division. He loved to travel. Most of all, David enjoyed spending time with his sons and grandchildren. He was a constant presence in scouting and ice hockey activities. He was a loving and fun husband, father, and Pop Pop. Surviving is his wife, Patricia, with whom he shared nearly 46 years of marriage; sons, David John Kowalek and spouse, Micaela Collins, of Carson City, NV; and Eric Daniel Kowalek and wife, Kristin of Milton; grandchildren, Jack, Savannah, Travis, Griffin, Emlyn and Taavi; a sister, Linda Vosheski and husband, Richard of Woodlyn; brothers, Eric Kowalek and wife, Clare of Wantagh, NY; and William Kowalek and wife, Ellen of Chandler, AZ; several nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Rosemary Williams (David), Sally Gorgas (Stan), and Bonnie Ricci (Charles); as well as numerous cousins. He will also be missed by his beloved cat, Zoe. Viewing and visitation hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 474 Yalick Road, Dallas. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Charles Grube, his pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Nanticoke Cemetery. If desired, contributions in David’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
